Particularly interesting to the gardener during the Autumn months are the traditional shrubs that add Autumn and Winter colour. Foremost amongst those are the dogwood (cornus) which is grown for its vivid Winter stem colour, virburnum and witch hazel (hamamelis) which, in Winter, has sweetly scented flowers on bare twigs.

Another shrub that provides excellent Autumn colour is firethorn (pyracantha) which is festooned with magnificent red, yellow or orange berries in Autumn.
