Cotoneaster is a shrub and can be either be deciduous or evergreen; in both cases the foliage normally comprises small, dark green leaves. It usually has white flowers in Spring, once the flowering has finished red berries appear giving an extended period of interest for the gardener. Some varieties of cotoneaster make excellent groundcover. Cotoneasters are generally considered to be hardy but please note that some varieties may require protection in extreme conditions. They will grow in any well drained soil and will thrive in all light conditions from full sun to heavy shade.
