Hostas, sometimes referred to as the plantain lily, are shade loving perennials that have fleshy roots and short spreading rhizomes. In Spring broad leaves, in colours that range from bright green to gold and even blue tones, emerge from a central crown and develop into a mound. Variegation of the leaves can result in an edging or center of white, cream, gold or splashes of other colours. Unfortunately hostas are a favourite food for slugs consequently they need protection from that pest. hosta
